ABUFARA DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY, SECURITY FORCES HOSPITAL MAKKAH Superior mesenteric artery syndrome (SMAS) is the result of compression of the transverse part of the duodenum due to narrowing of angle between the SMA and the abdominal aorta. It is also known by a variety of other names like Cast syndrome, Wilkie syndrome, arteriomesenteric duodenal obstruction, and chronic duodenal ileus.1 Till date, only 400 cases have been reported in the medical literature.2 Diagnosis of the syndrome depends on high index of clinical suspicion and the radiological features of the syndrome. The radiological appearances of this syndrome on barium meal are non-specific although it has conventionally been used.
