In the first season of Downtown Abbey, we are introduced to the Crawley family and their
servants the day after the sinking of The Titanic (April 1912).
All of Lord Crawley’s male heirs
were aboard the ship, so a distant cousin becomes heir to the estate.
This brings about scheming (some dastardly) from all sides of the family since some are viewed
as outsiders and interlopers.
There is also quite a bit of struggle between the royalty, middle
class, and servants.
The cast is huge and quite superb, especially Hugh Bonneville (Lord Crawley) and Brendan
Coyle (Lord Crawley’s valet).
The scandal and drama in Downtown Abbey is quite engrossing,
especially if you like good period drama!
