Deception on the Internet
Whether or not we know it or like it, deception is everywhere and it affects every one of
us who use the internet.
To deceive is defined as misleading, causing someone to believe what is
not true, catching by guile, to ensnare and to give a false impression (Deceive, 2004).
The
internet is an ever-growing concept, both in content and popularity.
As of March 2012, there
were over 835 million Facebook users with an approximate increase of 40 million users every
three months over the previous year ("Facebook users in," 2012), and it is estimated that Google
has about 422 million visitors per day ("Number of Google," 2010).
The convenience these sites
and other sites offer is luring and it keeps its users coming back for more.
The tools and
opportunities that parts of the internet offer seem too good to be true, because they can be.
Deception lies behind many parts of the internet.
