Head injury – when to seek medical help
The brain is a very complex organ and can easily sustain injury when an impact to
the head occurs.
The brain is protected by the skull but this can fracture and lead to
penetration of the brain, usually as result of accidents or assaults.
Any event which
results in the skull being attacked or damaged or penetrated requires medical
attention.
A common effect of head injury is bleeding on the brain or a blood clot, which occurs
in the space between the brain and the skull and presses on the brain.
A serious
head injury may cause (TBI) and any injury beneath the skull such as a blood clot
would be classed as TBI.
Brain injuries acquired after birth, as opposed to during
birth, are referred to as acquired brain injury (ABI) – traumatic brain injury is also
included as an ABI.
If someone has sustained a head injury – even a minor one which appears to have
