The history of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is quite young.
In 1980, the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) decided that for every vehicle, car VIN numbers should be
provided, and that a VIN decoder should be made available.
This provided a standardization of the serial
number of a vehicle.
Therefore, any vehicle that was built before 1981 does not have a standard VIN
number, because they do not follow the ISO standard set in 1980.
But why did ISO bother going through
all the trouble of giving cars VIN numbers? Basically, it meant that every single vehicle, regardless of
their make or model or their production run, could ever be replicated in such a way that people would
believe it was another vehicle.
That is the top and bottom of VINs: they allow people to make sure that
the car they are looking at is actually the car they are looking at, thereby reducing the occurrence of car
crimes.
