A Study Of Risk Of Cancer For People With Genital
Warts
Background:
A study was conducted involving people from different parts of the country to assess the
risk of cancer among people with genital warts.
Methods
We selected more than 17,000 men and 25,000 women who were identified with genital
warts within a period of about 30 years starting from 1980.
They were examined to identify
any type of cancer after they were diagnosed with genital warts.
Several specific tests for
specific type of cancer were done in these people.
Using the data obtained by this study
standardized incidence ratio or SIR was calculated for various types of cancers infecting the
human body.
This enabled to find the relative risk of specific type of cancers in people with
genital warts.
Results:
The results showed that there was a strong relation of genital warts with cancer of different
sites in the body.
The standardized incidence ratio of anal cancer for men was 21.
5 and
that for women was 7.
8.
