Hellenism at Met, New York, the Boxer at Rest, a 4th century B.C. bronze sculpture, will be on view at the Met until July 15th, thanks to the collaboration with Eni, to celebrate the Year of Italian Culture in the U.S.
From the Museo Nazionale Romano to the Metropolitan Museum of Art: the Boxer at Rest, a IV century B.C. bronze masterpiece, arrives in Manhattan to celebrate the Year of Italian Culture in the United States.
Found in 1885 during excavations on the Quirinal Hill – near the ancient Baths of Constantine – the statue is an extraordinary example of Hellenistic art, taking inspiration from two ancient statues of Herakles: the iconography of the winning athlete draws upon the mythical figure of the Greek god, a symbol of strength and virtue.The Boxer at Rest will be on view at the Met until July 15th, thanks to the collaboration with Eni.
This is only the beginning of over 200 cultural events scheduled in 2013 in over 50 American cities to celebrate Italian art.
