Surgical mesh is also used in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, a condition which occurs when one of the pelvic organs – the bladder, uterus, bowel or rectum drops from its normal position and pushes against the vaginal wall. This can happen when the muscles and connective tissues holding the organs in place become weakened. Through surgery, mesh is sometimes inserted through an incision in the vaginal wall which provides added support to the affected organ. According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), surgical mesh products which are used to cure pelvic organ prolapse (POP), stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and other health conditions of women are causing severe complications for women.
