Customizing LASIK Conventional LASIK surgery normally modifies visual impairments such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism which are considered lower order aberrations. Custom LASIK takes conventional LASIK one step further through the use of wavefront technology to correct for higher order aberrations. A 3D map which exhibits the patient’s refractive error is created by using a wavefront analyzer which examines how light travels through the eye. In a perfect eye, the wavefront will remain flat, but in an imperfect eye the wavefront represents the unique shape of that eye. These distortions are referred to as wavefront errors. The treatment of a patient with the data acquired from the 3D map specified by the wavefront analyzer can attain greater visual acuity than from the utilization of eyeglasses or contact lenses, or even conventional LASIK.
