Year of inclusion
Santana is a Portuguese territory, which has been designated as a World Biosphere
Reserve by UNESCO since June 29, 2011.
The presentation of the official certificate took place
on March 25, 2012.
The prestigious award was presented by Miguel Clusener Godt from the
Secretariat of the MAB programme (Man and Biosphere).
Santana is the first Biosphere Reserve in Madeira Island, one of seven Biosphere
reserves that exist in Portugal: Paúl do Boquilobo (1981) and Corvo (2007), Graciosa (2007),
Parque Transfronteiriço Gerês/Xurés (2009), Flores (2009), Berlengas/Peniche (2011) and
Santana (2011).
