Introduction To Food Allergies
Food allergy is an abnormal response to certain foods that is triggered by specific reactions in
the immune system.
Food allergies are usually confused with other types of food reactions such
as food intolerance, food poisoning and toxic reactions.
So what is the difference between these responses? Food intolerance occurs mainly in a variety
of diseases and its symptoms are usually more prevalent.
Furthermore, it is triggered by
different mechanisms that are unrelated to immunological reactions.
People usually think that they have food allergy whenever they get unpleasant feelings or
reaction after meals, this is not true; the prevalence of clinically proven food allergy is only about
3% in adults and 7% in children.
This incorrect perception is primarily due to misinterpreting
food intolerance and other diverse causes.
However, people must try to establish and identify
food reactions, as these reactions, though mild, can cause serious illness.
