1 THE FIRST INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION CAUSES Until the end of the 18th Century, European economy had been almost exclusively based on agriculture and trade. At that time, what we call industrial products today were crafts made in private homes, as was the case of fabrics (textiles). In an economy fundamentally based on handcrafts, the tradesman delivered wool to a family and they spun and wove it. Later they would return the finished product to the boss in exchange for a sum of money. This form of production was remarkably changed between the end of the 18th Century and the middle of the 19th Century. England was the country where these changes first began to take place. A set of conditions made it possible for this country to become an industrial nation in a fairly short time. This gave an impulse to invention and its application to production and transport.
