Students at Phoenicia Elementary School recently went on a different kind
of field trip—a trip back in time.
On March 24, the fourth grade classes
presented a Colonial Trades Fair, the culmination of six weeks of class work,
independent research, and hands-on learning.
For a few hours, the “cafetorium” was transformed into a bustling marketplace, complete with blacksmiths,
shoemakers, milliners, and a host of other colonial tradesmen and women.
Prior to the Fair, each fourth grade student conducted extensive research
on a trade that was common in early America, using books, internet sources,
and, in some cases, interviews with modern-day craftspeople.
They wrote a
research-based report, prepared a short speech, and created costumes, tools,
shop signs, and other appropriate props.
