Enjoying Comedy Theatre In London
Londoners and visitors have been enjoying comedy in the city for several centuries, and today
London s West End is still the place to go to enjoy a comedy, musical or drama.
In the compact
area known as Thetreland, are around 40 venues, many dating from the 19th century, and still
retaining their Victorian charm and decoration.
Recent West End productions have included
the comedies Yes, Prime Minister, What the Butler Saw, and Noises Off, as wel las several of
Shakespeare s lighter plays.
One of the most important events in the history of comedy theatre London was the arrival in the
city of a young playwright called William Shakespeare.
Many of his plays were performed for the
first time at the Globe Theatre, on London s South Bank and today the venue has been rebuilt to
allow today s crowds to enjoy as authentic an experience as possible.
The Globe has London s
only thatched roof and uses natural acoustics, with no use of amplifiers or microphone
