The supply of adequate numbers of quality teachers, required to provide quality
education for all children in Africa faces a number of very serious challenges which have
not been met by conventional approaches to teacher education First, the tremendous
upsurge in school enrollment since the 1990s following the global Declarations on
“Education for All” and the Millennium Development Goals and the adoption of the
policy of UPE (or UBE) in the majority of African countries has created the need for
more teachers.
