It’s been five weeks as I write this since I underwent a reverse ostomy, as the professional trade refers to it, and—wonder of wonders!—I haven’t faced a setback or even an unplanned trip to the emergency room. My colon was asleep for six months, and it has not necessarily awakened refreshed and ready for service. Those who enjoy the benefit of getting rid of their ostomy appliance have to learn patience while their reconnected digestive system replenishes the good bacteria necessary for processing food and drink, and learns to work in tandem with the small intestine once again. Of course, I’m not helping the team all that much, because I soon grew tired of a bland diet and limiting the intake of dairy products and reintroduced Mexican food and whole milk as part of teaching my digestive tract who’s
