Businessmen and Aviators: Combat Airmen
A recent book written by the French editor Gallimard, in partnership with the
French Ministry of Defense, rendered tribute to former combatants of the French Air
Force.
It can often be overlooked that the Battle of France, which took place from May
- June 1940, was a terrible battle, one in which France has nothing to be ashamed of.
With British support, French fighter pilots pugnaciously took to the skies against the
Luftwaffe and inflicted heavy damage on the enemy.
But they paid a high price: from 3
September 1939 until 22 June 1940, 541 French aviators were killed, 364 injured and
105 reported lost - in other words, 40% of rated officers and 20% of rated NCO’s.
