Overview
There are many different types of game engines many which of these
include; 2D, 3D, mobile or game modifications.
These are the main criteria
when it comes to using a game engine simply because you have the
obviously main two 2D and 3D but you also have games in which you can
modify in game, for example there are; Garry’s Mod, UDK and Quake.
These
are just a few of what there is to offer in the game engine sector but I will be
going into more detail of this later on in the article.
What is a game engine? A game engine is where you use reusable
components to create the game to bring the game to life.
A game engine is
used to abstract (which can be sometimes platform dependant) details of
creating common gaming tasks such as; Rendering, the physics and the input
that all go in the game.
The typical use for a game engine is to render 2D or
3D games, a physics engine or a collision engine (including collision
