Death toll rises to nine; at least 30 fishermen missing!
The prevailing weather conditions have caused nine deaths so far while the
Disaster Management Centre (DMC) stated that at least 30 fishermen who went out
to sea amidst strong winds and rain have been reported missing.
The DMC reported seven deaths in the Matara District alone while one death each
has been recorded in Monaragala and Galle.
Four people have been reported injured while another person has been reported
missing in Anuradhapura where the victim was caught in the overflowing currents
of the Malwathu Oya.
Meanwhile, the DMC reported that 106 homes were damaged in the Matara District
due to the weather conditions while 955 houses were partially damaged.
The Galle
District reported 14 damaged houses and another 55 partially damaged houses.
Furthermore, fallen trees have caused power failures in many areas in the Galle
District.
