Can You Eat It? Worksheet
Teacher’s Notes
1 In open class, drill the phrases ‘Yes, I can’ and ‘No, I can’t’.
Highlight the long /a:/ sound
in ‘can’t’.
2 Now drill the sentences ‘She can speak French’ and ‘She can’t speak French’.
Highlight
the fact that, while ‘can’t’ is stressed, ‘can’ is normally unstressed when used with
another main verb, and so is much shorter, with a weak form replacing the vowel sound.
3 Hand out the worksheet (page 2 of this document).
Explain that the students are going to
hear ten sentences, and they should write whichever word they hear, can or can’t.
4 Read the first sentence below.
Then, ask a student volunteer to come to the front of the
class.
Show this student the second sentence, and ask him/her to read it aloud.
Repeat
this with the remaining sentences, with a different student reading each sentence.
If a
student reads a sentence inaccurately or unclearly, note this, but do not intervene at this
stage.
