When the Faribault Woolen Mills
shut down in 2009, it drove
home just how far the economy had
fallen, both in the Minnesota city of
Faribault and across the nation.
After all, the Faribault Woolen Mill
Co.
had produced wool blankets at the
170,000-square foot mill from its headquarters along the Cannon River since
1890.
The company itself had existed
since 1865.
For those keeping track,
Abraham Lincoln was president back
then.
So when the company went out of
business after more than 140 years, it
looked like one more grim reminder of
how far the country had to go before it
dug out from the effects of the Great
Recession.
But now there is hope in Faribault,
thanks to the efforts of a former ice
cream king and Minneapolis-based
construction company Anderson-KM
