The Student Newspaper of Oklahoma Baptist University T H E B I S O N NICOLE SMITH News Editor 25 years is a long time to spend in pris- on. Especially if you aren’t guilty. This is exactly what happened to Mi- chael Morton, a man who was wrongfully convicted in 1986 for the murder of his wife. Thankfully for Morton, a Texas law- yer by the name of John Raley was con- tacted through the Innocence Project, “a national litigation and public policy orga- nization dedicated to exonerating wrong- fully convicted individuals,” and came to his aid. Raley fought to free Morton, with- out payment, and after seven years was able to help free Morton through the use of a DNA test. In recognition of his efforts Raley was given a 2013 Presidential Citation by the Texas State Bar. This man, who also happens to be a grandson of former OBU President John Raley, will be on campus April 7th to talk about his battle to free Morton.
