OF SANARY
San nari is the Provencal name of the 1st century Roman martyr Saint Nazaire.
In the Middle Ages, a
church was erected in honour of this saint where the village of Sanary stands today.
Originally a small hamlet
set on the shores of the Mediterranean, sheltered by a fortified tower built by the local lords in around 1300,
Saint Nazaire prospered from the 16th century onwards.
Annexed to the neighbouring town of Ollioules at the time, the town was granted independence in 1688.
Its
proud new coat of arms represented a tower bedecked with two palm leaves and topped with a cross.
Sanary is reputedly one of the French Mediterranean coast’s most typical and authentic fishing ports.
Its very
ancient natural harbour, set in the heart of town, is permanent home to around 100 heritage vessels dating back
as far as 1895, plus several old Provencal fishing boats locally known as «pointus».
