Shelley Mayfield.
After the Texas Golf Hall
of Famer and Brook Hollow
pro emeritus passed away on
March 22 at the age of 85,
some of the men who played
golf with him, worked with
him and bought hay from
him struggled to put their
finger on just what made
Mayfield who he was.
They
were at a loss for words.
“I wish I could tell you
more about him except that
there was a hell of a lot to
him,” said architect Jay
Riviere.
What emerges from their
testimony is a portrait of an
incredibly talented person
who was a true golf
Renaissance man, who could
boast great achievements in
the playing, teaching, architecture and club pro worlds.
But “boast” and Shelley
Mayfield do not go together.
