amateur tournaments in the state were
the Texas Amateur and the Houston
Country Club Invitational.
Rotan won
the State Am five times and the
Houston Invitational six times.
He
was a member of the victorious 1923
Walker Cup team and as a collegian
captained the Yale golf team to three
national championships in 1905, 1906
and 1907.
Most famously, he held the
course record at Pine Valley Golf
Club for more than three decades.
In the days before Ben Hogan and
Byron Nelson, before Texans put
their thumbprint on American golf,
“Texas golf” conjured images of cowboys and sand greens.
