n a state full of stories and legends about
its sports heroes, there are few sadder
tales than the saga of Morris Williams, Jr.
Williams is the biggest “what if.
” His listing among the best amateurs in state history
has a tragic caveat: Morris should have been
more famous for his exploits on the pro tour.
He had the game to make national noise.
But
he never got the chance.
While training for the
Air Force after college he was killed in a training exercise.
Had he lived, he certainly
would’ve turned pro.
But in the 1950s there was no Texas amateur better than Morris Williams, Jr.
in Austin.
Even at a tender age he was capable of beating the best adult amateurs in the state.
He will always be remembered for winning the
