2012 National Plan
Introduction: a brief history of ATD Fourth World Movement USA
In the early 1960’s, the United States launched an ambitious War
on Poverty and the founder of an international movement to
eradicate poverty, Joseph Wresinski, set his hopes on the
country.
Wresinski was inspired by the many creative projects
begun in the US around the belief that poverty could be
overcome, because they tackled all aspects of life.
To Wresinski
and the growing movement he created with families in poverty in
France, the US brought a crucial contribution to the worldwide
effort to understand and combat poverty.
It also showed a
willingness to recognize that industrialization and development,
as they were carried out, had not solved the problem of persistent
poverty.
Finally, the United States brought a cross-racial and
cross-ethnic view of persistent poverty to the broader
understanding of poverty and social exclusion worldwide.
