This section covers the most common issues facing graduate student
women while they study.
Mentoring and role models
Some women find it useful and inspiring to be around other women
who have more experience or have reached a goal they are aiming for,
such as a senior academic position.
This can be especially important
when you are in a male-dominated field.
Informal mentoring
sometimes does occur within schools and departments, with your
supervisor, or in departmental groups and seminars.
Some schools or
departments have more formal structures, such as through the Equal
Employment for Women in the Workplace Scheme (see ‘Working at the
University’ later in this chapter).
You may feel inspired by women who work in your field, your
organisation or the community.
If you know of someone who could
inspire women graduate students, you may wish her to be invited to
speak at a GSA event or to your school or department.
Contact the
GSA Women’s Officer or your school/department.
