107 Queer Graduate Students Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer (GLBTIQ) The term ‘queer’ once meant strange and unusual from a conventional viewpoint, and in some ways it still does. Previously used by the more conservative as an insult or question of character, ‘queer’ has more recently been reclaimed by the GLBITQ community as a positive form of self-identification. We use the term ‘queer’ because it is an affirmative term encompassing lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, transsexual, intersex, gender-queer and other non-heteronormative identifications. The term queer is used by freely by queer-identified people, heterosexual people, the media and wider community, as an inoffensive and all-encompassing umbrella of the wide and varied range of GLBTIQ lifestyles.
