Waste Management
The Mission of the UK Biochar Research Centre (UKBRC) is to undertake
leading edge multi- and interdisciplinary research on the role of biochar
as a carbon storage option (associated with sustainable energy
and waste technologies) and to provide an understanding
of the agronomic, environmental and socio-economic
context and impacts of biochar.
The UKBRC is developing
a comprehensive research agenda that will address the
key research and development challenges involved in the
deployment of biochar in the UK, and in partner countries in
Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
What is Biochar?
Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from
heating plant-derived organic matter (biomass)
in a low- or zero-oxygen environment to release
energy-rich gases (a form of bioenergy).
There is a
very wide range of potential biochar feedstocks: e.
g.
wood waste, timber, agricultural wastes, manure,
leaves, food wastes, straw, paper sl
