Cotton Mill Christmas – Backgrounder
Founded on May 20, 1980, the city of Valley was formed when four communities
of Shawmut, Langdale, Fairfax and Riverview came together.
These communities began
the southern textile revolution in the state of Alabama, but were forced to combine
when the industry declined.
Today, the city of Valley boasts more than 9,000 residents
and is located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River.
The four communities that
came together are now listed on the National List of Historic Places.
The ―Cotton Mill Christmas‖ event is a long-standing tradition that began in
1948 when Bruce Gray of West Point Manufacturing Company came up with the idea of
the Valley Nativity Scene.
The years since then have seen the expansion of the city’s
cherished Christmas event.
In 1956, West Point-Pepperell Manufacturing Company
donated the Christmas Merry-Go-Round to the area’s residents.
