When Is A House Energy Rating Assessment Required?
The Building Code of Australia requires all new homes in Victoria, South Australia, Western
Australia and Queensland to have a 6 star energy rating.
Your Building Surveyor will require an
Energy Rating Report prepared by an Accredited Assessor before a permit can be issued.
Any extension or alteration requiring a building permit also requires a House Energy Rating.
If the
renovation work represents less than 50% of the original volume of the building, then only the new
section will need to be rated 6 star energy ratings; more than 50% and the entire building will
require a 6 star energy rating Energy Rating.
These are, however, only rules of thumb, and
ultimately the decision is subject to the discretion of the Building Surveyor.
