1 Political and Strategic Signal behind Iran’s new Soumar cruise missile Research Associate at the Delhi Policy Group (New Delhi). Debalina Ghoshal I n March 2015, reports came in that Tehran has developed long range cruise missile with a range of 2500kms called the Soumar named after the Iranian town destroyed by Iraqi chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq War. This news came in a few days after Iran was reported to have started with mass production of its 300kms range Qadir cruise missile. Soumar is an advanced surface-to-surface missile capable of hitting targets with “high precision” and greater accuracy than its predecessors and would be equipped with modern navigation and propulsion systems. Reports have also suggested that with “external fuel tanks” the range of missile can be increased to 3000kms.
