According to the Alberta Government’s
Farm Accident Monitoring System, more
than 1300 injuries were reported to the
monitoring hospitals in 2005.
And it is
estimated that many more minor injuries
are never reported.
41% of reported injuries were due to livestock with the next
highest category of injuries due to farm
marchinery at 22%.
In 2005, 17 people lost their lives due
to farm accidents in Alberta; their ages
ranged from 15 - 84.
St.
John Ambulance, Red Deer Centre
recently took part in the Injury Prevention Workshop for Young Farm Workers
hosted by Safe Communities Coalition of
Central Alberta.
The workshop was held
at Olds College on March 18, 2006, and
was sponsored by Canadian Agricultural
Safety Association.
Eight organizations
presented topics on Farm Safety and
50 Young Farm Workers attended the
workshop.
