On September 11, 1906, Mahatma Gandhi coined the term "Satyagraha" to characterize South
Africa’s nonviolence movement. On September 11, 1973, Chile experienced a military coup.
On September 11, 2001, New York City, New York, and Washington, D.C., were attacked by
terrorists. Today, we receive daily reports of military conflict in the Middle East, the brutality of
ISIS in Iraq, Russia’s aggression in the Ukraine and the murderous gangs in Honduras. We
must acknowledge the sad possibility that the world’s capacity to tolerate the “unspeakable” has
only increased. Yet “even as we acknowledge our complicity,” may we contemplate the gift of
God’s mercy and renew our commitment to practice nonviolence and work for systemic change.
