Sloppy. Sluggish. Out of sync. Ohio State was all of those things in its home opener against Hawaii on Sept. 12, statistically underperforming against expectations. The Buckeyes were sloppy, committing seven penalties for 55 yards. The miscues included two that extended Hawaii drives, one that negated a 20-yard gain and an unsportsmanlike penalty on the Ohio State coaching staff when head coach Urban Meyer accidentally impeded an official on the sideline. The team was sluggish, failing to score on three of its first four drives and registering just 4.4 yards per play on the afternoon. Ohio State was out of sync as receivers failed to get on the same page with whichever quarterback was sending throws out of their reach and the offensive line struggled to communicate effectively in protection.
