1 Modern City Jazz To what extent is jazz a soundscape of the modern metropolis in the US, from 1900 to 1940? Jazz is an American style of music composed of Ragtime and Blues, with African-American roots, and distinguished by flexible rhythmic tempo, as a base accompanied with improvisation of solos. It was born and it evolved in four main cities: New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles. But in this evolution, Jazz took place and was highly broadcasted from modern metropolis such as New York. Jazz music has a large part of improvisation, the source of this is inspiration, which is, among other thing, linked to the environment of the player. This urban environment was relatively new, like the musical genre itself. But how did Jazz represent the modern metropolis? How can we say that it was a representative soundscape?
