UK passes one of the world’s strictest
anti-bribery laws

August 2010
Until 2009, no company had ever been convicted of bribery
in England.
Although it had been illegal for centuries,
prosecutions were rare because of outdated legislation
and the perception that bribery was a necessary cost of
doing business in certain countries.
Under England’s previous corruption laws, the Serious
Fraud Office had to prove an employee who bribed a
foreign official was the “directing mind and will” of the
company.
In other words, the bribery had to involve a board
member or senior executive.
Because bribes are typically
made by lower-level middle men such as local distributors
and marketers, the law was ineffective.
