From the days of the Johnson Administration
America has embraced living within the
community for those with mental illness and developmental disability. The purpose of this transition
in previous thinking was to eliminate the stigma associated with the institutional approach to housing
those with mental illness in large buildings that came with the impression that they were all
dangerous and ill-equipped to live on a city block.
As we approach 2014 we are still using residential services
providers, such as the adult foster care provider in Michigan
and the adult family care home in Florida to get the job done.
