At last, our year-end
newsle�er for 2009! �is
thing has been gestating,
off and on, for nearly
three months while
we’ve tried to think of
something funny to say!
And though we’re not
sure we’ve achieved that
goal, we don’t want to

hello, tell you that we are
both happy and healthy,

Our new home is a small, 1954 mid-century modern
“atomic ranch.
” It had been a college rental for decades.
Beginningabouttwoyearsago,wetoreitdowntothestuds,
cut through the concrete slab and moved the plumbing
into new walls to create a second bathroom.
In almost
every room we replaced small, single-pane windows with
large sliding glass doors.
�e house faces south, so it has
lots of passive solar.
We insulated the shallow 51⁄2” ceiling
(there’s no a�ic) with closed-cell polyurethane foam and
reinsulated the walls, wrapped the house in Tyvek, and
