If you want to reduce your home’s
energy consumption, first you need to
know where the savings are to be
found in your house by having an
energy audit conducted on your home.
You can do it yourself or bring in a professional.
According to the Department
of Energy web source here are some
tips to follow:
Do-It-Yourself- A simple but diligent
walk-through making a checklist of the
areas inspected and problems found.
The list will then become your “to do”
list and help you to prioritize your energy efficiency upgrades.
Set up your checklist into categories,
such as: Air Leaks; Insulation;
Heating and Cooling; and lighting.
In the Air leaks section make sure to
include checking these areas:
electrical outlets, window frames,
baseboards, fireplace damper, attic
hatches, switch plates, weather striping around doors, and wall or window
