GENDER EQUALITY IN THE AFRICAN UNION
On January 30, 2010, as a side event of the XIV Session of
the African Heads of State Summit, the Africa UNiTE Campaign to End Violence Against Women and Girls was
launched by the
African Union
Commission Chair
Person and the
United Nations
Secretary General.
The campaign is the Africa
Regional component of the UNiTE
C a m p a i g n
launched by the
United Nations
Secretary General
Ban Ki-moon in
February 2008.
With the ultimate
goal of reducing
the prevalence of
violence against
women and girls,
the Campaign
aims to create a
favorable and
supportive environment for Governments, in partnership with civil
society and
experts, to be able
to fulfill existing
policy commitments, as well as
to raise public
awareness and
increase the political will and resources for preventing and
responding to all forms of violence against women and girls
in Africa.
