The Orpheus Island Ecology Program
Orpheus Island is nestled amongst one of the world’s natural wonders … The Great Barrier
Reef.
The island is a natural beauty of 1,300 ha and boasts a wide variety of vegetation
including rainforest, eucalypts, and wild orchids.
In 1960, the entire island was declared a
National Park and a little later the surrounding waters were declared part of the Great Barrier
Reef Marine Park.
The islands fringing reef showcases 1,100 species of fish and 340 of the 350 known species
of reef coral.
These fringing reefs are an idyllic habitat for an abundant array of fascinating
marine life.
This island paradise provides an exceptional environment that inspires a
collection of enlightening nature based activities that form “The Orpheus Ecology Program.
