Orpheus Island is a true Great Barrier Reef island, located 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Townsville
and 190km (120 miles) south of Cairns, and 24 kilometres offshore.
The 1,300 ha granite island boasts
a wide variety of vegetation including rainforest, eucalypts, and wild orchids.
In 1960, the entire island
was declared a National Park and a little later the surrounding waters were declared part of the Great
Barrier Reef Marine Park.
The surrounding waters contain what is regarded by experts to be some of
the best coral on the reef boasting 340 of the 350 known species of coral and over 1,100 species of
tropical fish.
“Just a 10-minute boat ride lives a clus er of about 100 giant clams Snorkel ing over these giant beauties is an
experience to humble even the most jaded snorkeller.
