Busy town centre streets in Preston are being closed to transport in a bid to
boost Christmas shopping.
Cars are being banned from the paved areas of
Friargate and Orchard Street during late night shopping times and at weekends
to ensure the safety of shoppers.
The new access restrictions, effective from next Wednesday, will mean that
transport will not be allowed into the town’s pedestrian zones in the evenings
and at weekends when the shops are open and weekday parking restrictions will
be extended to Sunday from 16th
November.
Other areas close to the town centre
could also be affected but as yet, there has been no firm decision on this.
The council are aware that the new restrictions, which will be in force until 23rd
December, may cause problems for some Sunday churchgoers but that could
not be avoided.
