IN T R O D U C T I O N
In this paper I will refer to two segmental problems of transfer between
Spanish and English: the first one concerns syllable stress.
Most beginners
and low level students have problems stressing the right syllable in a word,
something that causes misunderstanding and comunication break down.
The second is the pronunciation of the interdental sounds /th/ as in “thigh”
and in “thy”.
Students have difficult with these sounds and often
substitute /t/ for /th/.
Although speaking is not the main focus of English in the school where I
