to find romance.
“I came to
China in search of the wilderness, the minorities, the color,” say Hibbard.
And that is
exactly what he found.
At least in his
overland travels through the vast countryside, from Tibet to the Burmese border,
where he survived on a diet of bean curd
and local sympathy.
The hardships of his six-month journey
were more than compensated for by the
radiance of the country and its people, and
Hibbard decided that China was where he
belonged.
As China opened up so did opportunities, and he became one of the country’s first foreign lecturers in tourism studies
at the Beijing Institute of Tourism, which
also happened to be the ideal place to pursue his burgeoning research on the history
of travel and, of course, tourism in China.
