What is audio compression?
The term itself is actually self-explanatory, but here s the definition:
“Audio compression is a way to reduce the size of the audio file.
”
There is one condition on this definition though: the audio file must still be playable after
compression, without decompressing it to original size when you want to play it (for example with
WinRAR or KGB Archiver).
If the file is compressed too much there will be loss of quality.
I put
the phrase too much between quotes because it differs from person to person whether it is too
much.
As one might hear the loss of quality, where the other doesn t.
The compression is done with
a thing called a codec.
This is a aggregation of the words: compressor and decompressor.
This
codec is a special algorithm to reduce the size.
