New Zealand’s legalisation of same-sex
marriage has prompted federal Opposition
Leader Tony Abbott to hint that the
Coalition may be allowed a conscience vote
after the next election.
In a retreat from his previous firm
opposition to a conscience vote, Abbott
told Sky News last week that the Coalition’s
positionongaymarriagewouldbe“amatter
for the post-election party room” and that
he “can’t pretend to bind my party for all
time”.
“I’m not trying to say that the party is
committed forever and a day to the current
position,” Abbott said.
Shadow education minister Christopher
Pyne defended Abbott’s position but
similarly hinted that the Coalition’s policy
could change later in the year.
