Global conflict overview
Since 1993 the number of violent conflicts has decreased - after an abrupt increase in the 80 s and beginning of the 90 s.
This decreasing tendency can be observed once again, for
the fourth time in the year 1997.
Outstanding is the fact that even though the number of conflicts has slightly increased, the number of violent conflicts is relatively small and keeps on decreasing.
Four fifth of all the conflicts in 1997 are carried out completely or predominantly without violence.
Only every fifth conflict is held violently (in 1995: every third, 1996: every fourth conflict).
Yet, two new wars have started and finished in 1997 ( Zaire, Cambodia).
